Sarah’s Choice Quilt Block

Sarah’s Choice is a great block for turning easy-peasy pinwheels into star blocks.  If you’ve seen my last two quilt tutorials on Easier Pinwheels and Martha Washington Stars, then you have all the information you need to make a Sarah’s Choice!

From light fabric:

  • 1 – 3.5″ square
  • 4 – 2″ x 3.5″ rectangles
  • 4 – 2″ squares

From dark fabric:

  • 1 – 3.5″ square
  • 8 – 2″ squares

First, make your pinwheel unit from both the dark and light 3.5″ squares.  These measurements and directions are for use with the Easier Pinwheels technique.  (If you are using the standard method, you will need 2 light 2-3/8″ squares and 2 dark 2-3/8″ squares.)  Put together the light and dark fabric with right sides together.

Sew 1/4″ all the way around the borders of the square.

Cut the sewn square diagonally twice in an X to create for 4 small squares made up of triangles.Sarah's Choice Quilt Block #2Sarah's Choice Quilt Block #3

Then sew each set together to create a pinwheel block.Sarah's Choice Quilt Block

Use a pencil to draw a diagonal line on the back of each dark 2″ square.Sarah's Choice Quilt Block #5

Align a dark square with a light 2″ x 3.5″ rectangle (right sides together) with the pencil line going from the outer upper corner to the bottom center.  Sew on the line and then trim seam allowance to 1/4″.  Press open the attached triangle.  Repeat with the other side.  This is a “flying geese” unit.  Do this for all four 2″ x 3.5″ rectangles.

Here’s a look at the process. You should end up with four rectangle units with two dark triangles sewn to the bottoms (see top example).

Sew the 2″ light squares to each side of TWO of the flying geese units.  Sew the remaining two flying geese units to your pinwheel unit with points facing out.  Press the seams open towards the squares in each row.Sarah's Choice Quilt Block #7

Sew the three rows together and press seams away from center row.  The block should measure 6.5″ square including seam allowances.  Sarah's Choice Quilt Block #8
