Back from Our Family Vacation!

I had the best intentions of keeping up with my posts while we were out of town this summer . . . and you see where that led me!  It was a wonderful trip with a couple side trips along the way but mostly spending time with family.  Now that we’ve settled back in here in Florida, I’ve discovered that I’m having a little writer’s block.  This post has been especially tedious to write with many erased drafts and much reflection.  I think the best way to ease myself back into the writing world is not with words but with images.  So here are some of my favorite highlights of our summer wanderings . . .

  1. Oh my Gosh, it looks like you all had such a wonderful trip. That’s great. I’m glad you’re back. I was wondering why I hadn’t seen any posts. I have a question about my sauerkraut in the jar…it’s been sitting in the salt water brine with the jam jar on top of it but it doesn’t seem to be fermenting. The liquid is covering all of the kraut and I press on it daily. It’s been about 10 days and it doesn’t really smell fermented. Have I done something wrong? Yesterday I finally took the jelly jar out and left it out and started to stir it with a long handled spoon once a day. Help!!!

    1. Hi Chris – I’m sorry it’s taken me a few days to get back with you. That’s great that you’re trying the sauerkraut! I don’t really think that it smelled very “ferment-y”. I judged it mainly by taste. After about a week, I began trying it once a day to see if it was tasting right. It never tasted off – just raw with various amounts of zing to it. Once I felt like it tasted “right”, I put it in the fridge. Since it’s been 3 days, I’d be interested to hear how it’s going now. Have you tried it yet?

    2. Hi Emily, thanks for getting back to me. It’s been about 15 days on the cupboard. I was waiting for it to show signs (smells) of fermentation but since you say that your’s never had a fermented smell maybe mine is ok. I was afraid that maybe I had done something wrong. I’ll put it in the refrigerator and try it .
