Welcome to Emily’s Homestead. I’m Emily and I have had dreams for a while of some acreage, a barn, a few chickens, and the life that comes with that territory. But with a sigh of regret, I’ve been putting off my homesteading dream because I am a military wife. We have never stayed in one house longer than two years. My husband, a pilot, whom I teasingly call my “Fly Guy”, and I have been married for 13 years and have moved 11 times. And it’s been a lot of fun. But, for a gal with an Interior Design degree, 13 years without a house of my own is a long time to wait to settle down and it has begun to wear on me. And retirement still seems a long way off.
Where are my chickens? Where is my root cellar? A garden to feed our family?
Instead of getting sorry for myself (okay, there was a little pity party or two), I’ve decided to take a look at the things my family and I can change in our every day lives. How can we be more self-sufficient? What can we make for ourselves?
**Update 4/4/2016**We have finally moved back home and are so enjoying getting to make a lot of our own changes to our property! You’ll notice many of them in posts as we finish projects. Lots of house repair/renovation along with yard work and garden planning. We feel so blessed to finally get to this point!**
This blog is going to entail our journey towards the Homestead, little by little. I’ll talk about some of my hobbies I enjoy, such as: Soap-making, Quilting, Cooking/Baking, Sewing Clothing, and Gardening. Also, I have a real passion for a “Life Less Chemical”. Along with changing our household cleaning products, we are trying to change our family’s diet to one that is whole foods with more fruits and veggies. But by no means are we even close to perfect! (I love me some baked goods, the more sugar the better, and we have two little boys who think hot dogs are their own food group.)
As enthusiastic as I am about a simpler life, I will be the first one to tell you that I don’t have all the answers. This is just my journey and I hope that I can share some fun things with you along the way.
